One of the first steps of preventing a motorcycle collision is proper motorcycle safety education. Driving a motorcycle requires different skills and safety precautions than driving a car, which is one reason why every state and D.C. requires a Class M motorcycle license or endorsement in order to drive a motorcycle.
Fatal motorcycle crashes occur 28 times more frequently than fatal crashes involving other vehicles. And in the 2018 statistics published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reportedly 27% of motorcycle riders killed in a crash in 2016 did not have valid motorcycle licenses.
So before you hit the road, be sure to complete motorcycle safety training and apply for a Class M license. Here are a few options for motorcycle training programs in the Upstate. Each of these rider education courses are recommended through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (which has classes of its own), and some are authorized by the SCDMV.
The South Carolina Technical College System offers motorcycle rider training for all levels of experience (course offerings may differ per location).

- Piedmont Technical College
2. Blue Ridge Community College
Blue Ridge Community College offers 4 different rider courses, including a course for both driver and passenger. These courses are approved by both the National Motorcycle Safety Foundation and the North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Education Program.
3. Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College
ABTCC’s motorcycle safety education program offers basic training in learning to operate a motorcycle as well as safety tips for maneuvering a motorcycle in hazardous situations.
Each course has basic requirements for qualification and for what you need in order to complete the course. Be sure to read the requirements carefully in order to make sure you take advantage of the full benefits of the course.
